Who the hell is Imus anyway

For 4 solid days during my recent visit to the USA one could’ve been forgiven for thinking that the entire world was in hibernation, there were no wars, no bombings, no court cases, no sports games, no elections etc! All I saw on TV, read about in the newspapers or listened to on radio was the hysteria following a three word phrase Imus used on a radio programme.

In a country where free speech is meant to be a protected right may Allah save your rascist soul if you’re ever caught saying the words “Nappy Headed Ho’s” when used to descibe a womans (multi-racial) basketball team. Don Imus is a big name radio DJ I’d never heard of who is allegedly infamous for being controversial and deliberately saying the wrong thing.

So I tried to find out what “Nappy headed ho’s” means, ‘cos like, you know, if, as the players themselves claim, it has left them “scarred for life” (direct quote) it must be pretty harsh. All I could find, I didn’t search that hard, was this.

These poor little basketball players will carry this with them for the rest of their lives.

Scarred for life, haha, as laughable as that notion is, it is also an insult to the millions of black people who were on the receiving end of apartheid and have subsequently forgiven , forgotten and moved on with their lives!

You won’t find exactly what he said in the papers or on the TV, yet trust me when I tell you that this fiasco was all you heard, read or saw in 4 days. R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S.

This now eclipses my favourite un-newsworthy story to date, the “Injured Parrot saved by Skateboarder in Park” headline I saw on the front page of an Aussie daily newspaper a few years back.

    HI Wozafriday,

Nice blog. I’ve enjoyed reading through some of it it. Regarding the Imus hysteria, it’s true, you’ve witnessed a peculiarly “American” way of dealing with the legacy of racism. The slur “nappy-headed hos” is literally understood as “kroes-kop hoers,” or “curly-headed whores.” The nappy is a distinctly racial way of referring to black people’s hair in a derogatory manner. The “hos” is a pop-culture way of saying “whores.”

The problem with the Imus quote, for Americans, is pretty obvious. He’s debasing black women for no particular reason except that they’re black and they’re women.

Imus is not unique, of course, but the furore is over the fact that the gets sponsorship for his radio program from huge mult-national corporations. This is to say that he had a certain amount of legitimacy as a social commentator. But no more. He’s toast.

You made an interesting point, comparing the sensitivity of Americans to racial issues versus South Africans, who just emerged from apartheid. I guess the sensitivity comes from the fact that many Americans still think that there is racism structuring social opportunities, and when such racist sentiments are so casually pronounced by someone of Imus’ stature, then it offers a new point for social commentary. It reinforces a lingering belief for many. I wonder if South Africans are becoming more like this now that apartheid is over, that racism is no longer an official policy. Certainly most believe that racism still exists in some form. But, following your question, I too wonder if South Africans would react with the same outrage as Americans.

As an American, I enjoyed your spirited response to what must have seemed bizarre for someone who comes from South Africa.
    Cheers,
    Henry

Thanks for your great comment Henry.

I do get it and I understand the sensitivity around what he’s saying however it surely isn’t as big a deal as its being made out to be by the main stream media. We have had many instances in SA where politicians, DJ’s, TV personalities etc. utter racial slurs on boths sides of the fence but I don’t think I have ever witnessed such an explosive media uproar as this one.

Its all about playing to the media, playing the victim (the Rutgers girls), playing the apologist (Imus) and the public giving lip service to political correctness.

Obviously the sponsors are affected and so is the radio station but hey, its a one day news story “Imus sacked for racial slur” end of story, move on. It isn’t necessary to bring slavery into it, or for the girls to go public about being “scarred for life” blah blah.

Of course racism still exists in SA, probably more so than in any other country in the world. But is it not a fundamental right of any free country in the world to actually be a racist, or for that matter a Holocaust denier, fanatical muslim etc.

Imus has not been prosecuted for saying what he did, he didn’t even commit a crime.

People uttering racial slurs in SA are criminally charged, as are Nazi apologists in Germany and holocaust deniers in Israel.

Some have said that Imus’ comment was offensive to all black people, that is racist in itself as it assumes that all people with the same skin colour feel and think the same way.

Modern media culture FEEDS off that shit. If those idiots were scarred for life because of those words, then they really need to give themselves a nice big slap and think about those starving all over the planet and reconsider what it really means to be hard done by. Heck, if slavery is the topic, why not consider what their ancestors went through, and then ponder whether being called a “nappy headed ho” is really that bad. Personally, I’d phone him up, tell him he’s a wanker, and there you go, job done.

I think the world has lost it’s sense of humour - I’m quite sure Imus isn’t a racist. I guarantee he said it in jest, his mouth slightly ahead of his brain, and now he’s jobless. It’s fine for Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock to take the piss out of white guys (and good on them - they’re funny!) but it’s NOT ok the other way round. Political correctness continues to be an oxymoron, it seems.

Yeah Matt I agree with you!

If these kids were scarred for life by what some geriatric viagra advert had to say then imagine what the kids at Virginia tech right now are feeling, this issue has finally been pushed off the news pages albeit for the wrong reasons.

    Hey Dave

Thanks for the blog, just checking it out today for the first time. Super!

I’ve been living in Boston for four years, and my input on the Imus story, racism aside, is that this is simply how the US media cover “newsworthy events”. Something gets beaten to death if nothing vaguely more scandalous is going on. So, I really only get my news online now (and certainly not from a US news source).

Right about now, I’m getting nostalgic about ol’ Imus… because all we hear about at the moment is Paris in jail :(

    Thanks!

I hear ya, I’m in O’Hare airport at the moment and its all over the screens …. PH that is!!!
